By now you likely have heard about the security breach affecting major U.S. companies like Citibank, Target and Walgreens. Apparently these companies outsource their email marketing lists to a company named Epsilon. This past week Epsilon experienced a major security breach and an unknown number of email addresses (from their client companies) were stolen. I personally received an email from Target informing me of the situation and encouraging me to be on the lookout for fraudelent emails. This massive security breach, possibly the biggest ever, has caught an enormous amount of media attention. Can you imagine how the executive team at Citibank, Target and Walgreens felt when they heard the news?
Your client’s data is possibly one of your greatest assets. The privacy of that data is of the utmost importance. Just picture telling your biggest client his information has been compromised. What would he or she say? At worst, you might lose them (and anyone they tell) as a client. At best, their trust in you is shaken severely. Ask any business owner, and he or she will firmly declare their client’s data must be protected.
Unfortunately, this isn’t reality. We regularly encounter Chicago area businesses who are opening themselves, and their client information, to risk. We find security risks such as wireless networks that are not properly configured and the total absence of antivirus software. These are serious security issues that could put all your data, including your client information, at risk.
